2005-08-02:  The new venture between Perago and SIA achieved its first success in the European market. It was announced today that SIA was awarded the contract for the new system of the Sveriges Riksbank (Central Bank of Sweden).  Perago, now part of the SIA group, will provide the software, as well as implementation services in collaboration with SIA. 2005-07-05:  Perago today announced a joint venture with Societa Interbancaria Automazione S.p.A. (SIA), a leading European financial infrastructure services provider.  As part of the transaction SIA will acquire a 30% stake in Perago thereby enabling the company to enter a new phase in its development.  In order to facilitate the transaction Business Connection (BCX) has sold its 25% stake to management. 2005-02-21:  With the implementation of the Uganda National Interbank Settlement System (UNIS), the Bank of Uganda marked a milestone in the country’s payment system reforms.  UNIS utilises the Perago:rtgs system – a proven secure, efficient and robust solution in operation in a number of other countries.  The RTGS system commenced live operations on 21 February 2005, as originally planned. 2004-10-27:  Dr Philip Tromp, Managing Director of Perago was awarded the 'Chief Information Officer of the Decade’ award by the Computer Society of South Africa (CSSA) and Computerweek Strategist at a gala event held on 27 October 2004 in Johannesburg.

“… Tromp has taken the opportunities created in his business and IT management career to the ultimate high of success: he has enabled financial systems that allow Africa to participate in the global financial arena; created a sustainable business; recognised the contribution of individuals through granting them equity in Perago; and he continues to empower future generations through sharing his knowledge.  While his position has changed from that of CIO, his contribution from the time of his award (1995 when he was at the South African Reserve Bank) and within the specific criteria laid out ensure that Tromp is truly deserving of the title Computerweek Strategist / CSSA ‘CIO of the Decade’. …Tromp epitomises the qualities of individual and intellectual excellence in his ability to translate technology and business acumen into real gains, empowering both people and countries and contributing sustainable value in a global context”.

On the award …

The ‘CIO of the Decade’ is an award that recognises the impact and contribution made to the business environment through the application of technology by one of the individual winners of the ‘CIO of the Year’ award from the last 10 years.  With 2004 being the tenth anniversary of South Africa’s democracy, it was deemed appropriate to review the outstanding CIOs of the last decade and this honourary award was made.  In arriving at the selection, the judges appraised and evaluated the legacy of the individual since the time of receiving the award the 'CIO of the Year' award in terms of:

• Contribution to South Africa (influence extending beyond the business);

• Most dramatic impact on business (considering efficiencies, bottom line contribution and business value);

• Sustainability of projects; and

• Level of innovation within business (technology).

2004-10-27:  Kennedy Mothibi, Perago’s first sponsored student on the Information Technology Banking Learnership Programme (ITBLP, Read more >), won the 2004 Expo prize for the best project in the Department of Technical Applications in the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology at the Tshwane University of Technology.

Kennedy was selected with 5 other ITBLP learners to present his practical IT Project at the 2004 Expo of the Tshwane University of Technology, held at the Soshanguve campus, north of Pretoria, and was selected as the best ITBLP project.  He then went on to compete with four other departmental winners, mainly teams of students completing their final year graduate studies at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, to win the overall 2004 Expo prize for the best Department of Technical Applications project.  Taking into consideration that the ITBLP learnership is a one year academic certificate course, and that he competed as an individual, Perago is very proud of Kennedy’s achievement.

2004-10-14:  Perago exhibited at the SWIFT SIBOS conference in Atlanta from the 11th to the 14th of October 2004.  This was the third time that Perago has been at SIBOS showcasing its product and service offering to the international financial community.  The main Perago products at SIBOS this year were two Perago proprietary software products aimed at central banks, namely Perago:rtgs and Perago:csd, and a new offering aimed at all financial institutions wishing to utilise SWIFT FileAct for bulk payments, named Perago:bulkpay.  Information on Perago's TrustLink SWIFT service bureau was also available at the stand.

Perago shared the stand with SIA, its international business partner in the field of financial infrastructure solutions.  SIA is a leading European payment and financial infrastructure service provider.

2004-06-21:  The Bank of Uganda selected the Perago:rtgs system to provide its country’s RTGS services.  The contract was awarded in June 2004, contract negotiations completed and the implementation project initiated soon thereafter. The Perago:rtgs was successfully installed at the Bank of Uganda.  The Uganda National Interbank Settlement (UNIS) service is scheduled to commence on 21 February 2005.  Read more >

2004-06-21:  The Bank of Zambia launched the new Zambian Inter-bank Payment Settlement System (ZIPSS) on 21 June 2004. This provides Zambia with a state-of-the-art payment system based on international best practice and Southern African Development Community (SADC) guidelines. The system utilises the Perago inter-bank settlement solution, Perago:rtgs, a system based on real-time gross settlement (RTGS) principles. The implementation was completed, as scheduled, in just eight months. The Bank of Zambia is also the second central bank in the region to use the Perago Trustlink service for its RTGS SWIFT connectivity requirements. Read more >

2004-05-15:  The second Perago User Conference, held in Pretoria from the 12th to 14th of May, was a huge success with over a hundred delegates attending from eight countries. 2003-12-16:  An address on " Settlement risk: The transition to tomorrow's payment mechanisms" was delivered by Dr Philip Tromp at the inaugural SWIFT regional conference in the Middle East, held from 16-18 December 2003. The talk covered key concepts in the transformation of payment systems, the impact such transformation on central banks and commercial banks, the payment mechanisms of the future and the challenges for the next five years.
